International Rivers Network

IRN is an advocacy NGO with the aim to support 'local communities working to protect their rivers and watersheds…halt destructive river development projects, and to encourage equitable and sustainable methods of meeting needs for water, energy and flood management.' ADB enters into dialogue with IRN, but does not necessarily endorse its views.

The following text was taken from the IRN website

'IRN's mission is to halt and reverse the degradation of river systems; to support local communities in protecting and restoring the well-being of the people, cultures and ecosystems that depend on rivers; to promote sustainable, environmentally sound alternatives to damming and channeling rivers; to foster greater understanding, awareness and respect for rivers; to support the worldwide struggle for environmental integrity, social justice and human rights; and to ensure that our work is exemplary of responsible and effective global action on environmental issues'.

IRN has campaigns with its networked organizations in : Africa, China, Latin America, South Asia, South East Asia and on International Finance.

As part of their follow up on WCD, IRN has prepared a 'Citizens Guide to the World Commission on Dams'.
