Yasuyuki Sawada

Yasuyuki Sawada joined the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) as a Visiting Fellow in January 2022.

He is currently a professor at the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Economics. From March 2017-August 2021, he was Chief Economist of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Director General of its Economic Research and Regional Cooperation Department. He was ADB’s chief spokesperson on economic and development trends and led the production of ADB’s flagship knowledge products and support for regional cooperation fora.

He has also worked with other key development organizations, such as the Japan International Cooperation Agency, Research Institute of Economy, Trade, & Industry, World Bank, Economic Research Institute of ASEAN and East Asia, Pakistan Institute of Development Economics, Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies, International Rice Research Institute, International Water Management Institute, and BRAC Bangladesh.

His research interests include development economics, microeconometrics, the economics of disasters, and field surveys and experiments. He obtained his BA in economics from Keio University, MA in economics from Osaka University, MA in international relations from University of Tokyo, and MA in international development policy and PhD in economics from Stanford University.
