Tokyo, Japan – A new ADBI book examines the outlook for building a hydrogen society in Asia and the Pacific, where growing numbers of countries are adopting strategies for promoting investment in hydrogen technology and related infrastructure development.

Hydrogen in Decarbonization Strategies in Asia and the Pacific describes green hydrogen produced by renewable energy as a “game-changing” solution for ensuring energy security and achieving climate targets, with significant potential for supporting the transition of hard-to-abate sectors, such as steel and cement; long-term energy storage; and cross-border trade. Furthermore, expected cost declines could help mainstream this new energy source to become a part of economic activities.

Edited by ADBI’s Dina Azhgaliyeva and KE Seetha Ram and Peking University’s Haoran Zhang, the book draws on cases from both hydrogen-importing and -exporting countries in the region and details the challenges and benefits of promoting green hydrogen for accelerating carbon neutrality.
