Tokyo, Japan – A new ADBI Press book explores a novel approach for measuring transport infrastructure performance relative to the impacts on individual happiness and social burden to assess project values for quality of life (QOL). Coedited by ADBI’s KE Seetha Ram and Chubu University’s Yoshitsugu Hayashi and Hiroyuki Takeshita, Quality of Life Assessment in Urban Development and Transport Policymaking details this holistic method that can help design infrastructure development policy for navigating sustainable development.

The book outlines the concept of QOL evaluation and successful applications in Asia and the Pacific. Drawing upon cases from France, Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom, it explains how the QOL accessibility method can be integrated with traditional evaluation methods to facilitate the assessment of wider project implications. The book also highlights the applicability of the QOL evaluation method for developing countries in the post-COVID-19 era.

New perspectives and research spotlighted in this book were built upon discussions held during the Asian Development Bank Institute–Chubu University International Symposium on Mainstreaming Quality of Life in Evaluation of Transport and Spatial Planning.
