Asian Development Bank Institute, Yale University

The COVID-19 pandemic has touched everyone in some way, but many of its impacts, such as job losses and care burdens, have been disproportionately felt by women. Nearly three years after the pandemic began, as countries move toward recovery and face new threats, how has women’s economic engagement changed and what policies can promote gender inclusive post-pandemic recovery and resilience against future shocks?

The Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) and Yale University invite submissions of original rigorous empirical and/or theoretical papers in economics or related fields such as political science that improve understanding of gender-sensitive responses to COVID-19 and efforts to strengthen economic resilience in Asia and the Pacific. Selected papers will be featured during a conference on 9-10 March 2023 in Tokyo.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Job losses and labor market re-entry during the COVID-19 pandemic and other crises
  • Changes in job quality and job dimensions, including transition across informal and formal employment
  • Norms associated with women, work, and discrimination
  • Labor market linkages–access to information and markets, and gender gaps in economic outcomes
  • Remote data collection amid the pandemic and the implications for data analysis and understanding
  • Policy responses to economic changes and their relevance to women's economic opportunities and welfare during the pandemic and future crises
