Call for Papers on Farmers’ Organizations and Sustainable Development

Asian Development Bank Institute and Annals of Public and Cooperative Economics

Farmers’ organizations such as cooperatives, associations, self-help groups, producer organizations, farmer-based organizations, farmer groups, and collective action can help to boost farmer productivity and bargaining power, farm management skills, household welfare and livelihoods, and rural development. However, the relationship between farmers’ organizations and broader sustainable development and policy design remains unclear.

The Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) and Annals of Public and Cooperative Economics (APCE) are seeking theoretical, empirical, and experimental papers on farmers’ organization impacts and implications for sustainable development policy in Asia and beyond. Papers on farmers’ organization governance and literature reviews are also welcome. Selected papers will be featured during a related conference and considered for inclusion in a special issue of APCE, an SSCI journal with a current impact factor of 1.905.

Paper topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Production performance, including revenue, yield, efficiency, production diversity, and product quality
  • Adoption of technologies, especially sustainable technologies such as organic fertilizers, biopesticides, improved seeds, mechanization, environmentally friendly technologies, integrated pest management, green control practices, climate-smart agricultural practices, and climate change adaptation strategies
  • Marketing performance, including market participation, marketing channel choices, marketing efficiency, sales price, sales decision-making, bargaining power, and contractual arrangements
  • Objective wellbeing, such as livelihoods, income, consumption, food security, nutrition intake, and dietary diversity
  • Subjective wellbeing, including happiness, life satisfaction, and loneliness
  • Women’s empowerment and intra-household decision making, including labor allocation and migration
  • Financial inclusion
  • Linkages with global value chains

Submission Procedure

Authors should submit their papers via APCE’s online system at this link by 31 July 2022 and select “SI: Farmers’ Organizations” when choosing the submission type. There are no submission fees.

All paper submissions must be original and not under consideration for publications elsewhere. They must also comply with APCE’s author guidelines

All submissions will be subject to double-blind peer review and editorial processes following APCE policies.

Arrangements for Selected Papers

Authors of selected papers will be invited to present at an ADBI conference on 29-30 August 2022. The conference will take place in Tokyo should conditions allow and ADBI will provide travel support to one author per paper. The author must be a citizen of an Asian Development Bank member economy.

The conference will be held virtually in the event of COVID-19 travel disruptions.

Papers selected for the special issue will be announced after the conference.
