Call for Papers on Enabling Gender-Sensitive COVID Recovery in Asia

The COVID-19 pandemic has touched everyone in some way, but many of its impacts, such as job losses and care burdens, have been disproportionately felt by women. Better understanding how women’s economic engagement has changed amid the pandemic and gender sensitive policy responses will be critical to achieving robust and inclusive recovery.

The Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) and Yale University are seeking submissions of original, unpublished empirical and/or theoretical papers in economics or related fields that explore the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects on women’s economic activities and policies to promote more gender-equitable recovery in Asia. The papers will be featured during a related conference in Tokyo that will bring together researchers and government officials from the region to discuss policy next steps. 

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Labor market dropout and re-entry during the pandemic
  • Changes in job quality and job dimensions, including transition across informal and formal employment
  • Norms associated with women, work, and discrimination
  • Labor market linkages—access to information and markets, and gender gaps in economic outcomes
  • Remote data collection amid the pandemic and the implications for data analysis and understanding
  • COVID-19 policy responses and their relevance to women's economic opportunities and welfare

Submission Procedure

Authors should submit their papers via this link by 31 January 2022. Papers should include the authors’ affiliations and contact information.

Submissions will be evaluated in terms of their originality, analytical rigor, and policy relevance to Asia. Authors of accepted papers will be contacted by 15 March 2022.

Limited travel funding is available for selected authors who are citizens of Asian Development Bank member economies and can demonstrate need. Please indicate in your submission if you require travel funding.
