Description
Climate change poses significant risks to the AFNR sector due to its high dependency on temperature and moisture. High temperatures, extreme heat, increasing drought severity, and extreme rainfall can have severe consequences on water resources, agro-ecosystems, economic development, food security, and nutrition. Glacial melt, shifts in flood peak patterns, and altered timing of heavy precipitation can trigger climate-related natural hazards. Rural communities' low adaptive capacity, poverty, and dependence on agriculture make them highly vulnerable. ADB is developing climate risk assessments for Central and West Asia, with significant progress in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Georgia. Through stakeholder engagement, ADB aims to develop climate-oriented investment projects to increase resilience of communities to climate change.
Objectives
- Government to leverage on the results of climate risk assessments to plan climate adaptation interventions.
- Facilitate cross-learning to scale-up climate risk-informed adaptation planning in other sectors, developing member countries (DMCs), and investment projects to increase financing for adaptation.
