Cambodia Country Partnership 2019-2023 consultation with government held

Secretary of State of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) Vongsey Vissoth and ADB Country Director for Cambodia Sunniya Durrani-Jamal on 7 March 2019 co-chaired a meeting to confirm key strategic areas of the next country partnership strategy (CPS) 2019-2023. The team of more than 40 people from MEF, CARM, Private Sector Operations Department and sector divisions exchanged views on ADB's priority investments and discussed ways to enhance development impacts.

Recruitment of consulting services training held

Over 80 government officials from the Ministry of Economy and Finance and line ministries participated in the training organized by ADB in Cambodia on 6-7 March 2019 in Phnom Penh. The activity aims to enhance performance of ADB-financed projects. Participants discussed methods for selecting consultants, evaluation of technical and financial proposals, and contract negotiation and management. ADB Principal Portfolio Specialist Joonho Hwang delivered welcome remarks and ADB Senior Procurement Officer Sokunthea Sok led the training.

Board members meet Cambodia Deputy Prime Minister, project beneficiaries

Cambodia Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Finance, and ADB Governor, Aun Pornmoniroth, and other senior government officials met ADB Board members to discuss development priorities and ADB support during their group visit on 16-21 February 2019. Dean and Team Leader, Executive Director (ED) Kshatrapati Shivaji, EDs In-chang Song, Shahid Mahmood, Kris Panday; and Alternate EDs Scott Dawson and Jin Lu, accompanied by Country Director Sunniya Durrani-Jamal, visited ADB sovereign and nonsovereign operations and project sites which included wastewater treatment facilities, irrigation schemes, a skills training center, and a commercial bank where they met project beneficiaries. In addition, they met with development agencies, representatives from the private sector, civil society organizations, research institutes, and staff of ADB Cambodia Resident Mission.

Country Partnership Strategy 2019-2023 discussion retreat held

The Cambodia country team, led by ADB Country Director Sunniya Durrani-Jamal, discussed the next country partnership strategy 2019-2023 on 24-25 January 2019 in ADB headquarter. The team focused on confirming the CPS and key areas of ADB's medium- to long-term investments that are aligned with the government's vision, Strategy 2030, and the Sustainable Development Goals. Over 70 managers and staff from sector divisions, Private Sector Operations Department, Sustainable Development and Climate Chang Department, policy and operational support departments, and peer reviewers participated in the discussions. Director General of ADB’s Southeast Asia Department Ramesh Subramaniam gave closing remarks.

ADB speaks at National Committee for Sub-National Democratic Development workshop

ADB Country Director for Cambodia Sunniya Durrani-Jamal joined Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sar Kheng at the closing session of the national workshop on 27 December 2018 in Phnom Penh. On behalf of the development partners of the technical working group supporting decentralization reforms, Ms. Durrani-Jamal emphasized the strategic priorities on reform management, functional reassignments and fiscal decentralization, and accountability of subnational administrations to local citizens.

Executive Director Anuar bin Ariffin visits Cambodia

Executive Director Anuar bin Ariffin on 5-7 December 2018 met with government officials and discussed ADB-financed projects. He met poor communities receiving livelihood skills training and grants, and visited rice seed production and storage facilities under the Tonle Sap Poverty Reduction and Smallholders Development Project which has benefited around 600,000 people through increased agricultural productivity and improved access to market. In addition, he met with representatives of ACLEDA bank, which ADB has provided support by extending loans to small and medium enterprises, and ADB Cambodia staff.

Final TA Workshop held for Third Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Project

ADB Country Director for Cambodia Sunniya Durrani-Jamal and Secretary of State of the Ministry of Rural Development Try Meng 30 November 2018 opened the final technical assistance workshop in Phnom Penh. About 100 participants from national and subnational government joined development partners to discuss the findings and recommendations of a study for the proposed project. The project will benefit about 640,000 rural people through improved access to water supply and sanitation services.

Alternate Executive Directors visit Cambodia

Alternate Executive Directors (AEDs) Scott Dawson and Mario Di Maio on 13-16 November 2018 visited Cambodia to meet with senior government officials from the ministries of Finance, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Public Works and Transport, and Education; and representatives from development partners, the private sector, and civil society. ADB Country Director for Cambodia Sunniya Durrani-Jamal accompanied the AEDs to meet with local authorities and beneficiaries at an ADB-financed private sector Solar Power Project, a Climate Resilient Rice Commercialization Sector Development Program, an Uplands Irrigation and Water Resource Management Project, and a Technical and Vocational Education and Training Sector Development Program.

ADB hosts seminar on industrial revolution

Director General of ADB’s Southeast Asia Department Ramesh Subramaniam on 2 November 2018 opened a high-level seminar in Phnom Penh, which brought together over 70 senior policy makers, and representatives from private sector and civil society. The participants discussed how the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and regional cooperation can drive structural transformation of ASEAN countries and Cambodia. Recommendations were made on how policy makers could prepare Cambodia for 4IR through development of a national strategy for digitalization, infrastructure and human resource development, improvement of the business climate and support to SMEs to link these to global value chains. The panel discussion will inform the preparation of ADB’s new Country Partnership Strategy, 2019-2023. The seminar featured two ADB studies on intraregional trade and 4IR.

Cambodia, ADB sign loan and grant agreements

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Finance, and ADB Governor H.E. Aun Pornmoniroth and ADB Country Director for Cambodia Sunniya Durrani-Jamal on 24 October 2018 in Phnom Penh signed loan and grant agreements amounting to $249 million for four programs and projects. The investment will help Cambodia develop high-quality human resources, improve urban environmental infrastructure in the Tonle Sap basin and Greater Mekong Subregion central corridor towns, and boost tourism in southern coastal areas in Cambodia.
