ADB speaks on waste management projects at the International Business Forum

Country Director Giovanni Capannelli made an opening speech at the “R4PARTNERS” International Business Forum on waste management in Almaty. In his presentation, he emphasized the urgent need for urban infrastructure rehabilitation in Kazakhstan, and presented ADB’s recently approved technical assistance on Urban Infrastructure Modernization and Finance Facility, which will assist the government of Kazakhstan in developing a roadmap for sustainable development and financing of urban infrastructure, including waste management projects.

ADB speaks at the Central Asia Climate Change Conference in Almaty

Country Director Giovanni Capannelli made an opening speech at the Central Asia Climate Change Conference chaired by Kazakhstan’s Vice-Minister of Energy Gani Sadibekov. In his presentation, he spoke about Kazakhstan's risks related to increasing temperature levels and vulnerabilities affecting the water, agriculture, and transport sectors. He also elaborated on ADB's focus on climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts as one of the three pillars of the Kazakhstan 2017-2021 CPS, the Bank’s support to the establishment of the Kazakhstan Knowledge Center on Integrated Water Resource Management, and CAREC TA promoting Astana city’s low-carbon development focused on providing support to improving climate change data and the preparation of an investment roadmap promoting Astana’s low-carbon economic growth.

ADB discusses support to the Kostanay region’s digitalization strategy

Country Director Giovanni Capannelli visited the Kostanay region of Kazakhstan to present the preliminary findings of an ADB report in support to SME and entrepreneurship development. He also participated in a working group meeting at the Oblast Akimat on the digitalization of Kostanay region, focused on Kostanay as a smart city and on digital agriculture. Country Director also discussed plans to support the introduction of drone technologies and the establishment of a branch of the AgriTech Hub located in Almaty.

ADB discusses opportunities for cooperation with Akim of Stepnogorsk

Country Director Giovanni Capannelli visited Stepnogorsk city and made a presentation on opportunities for cooperation with ADB, with a focus on SME development, at the meeting chaired by Stepnogorsk Akim Anuar Kumpekeyev. Jointly with Deputy Chair of Damu Fund Galym Nurgaziyev, he also visited three leading local SMEs.

ADB speaks on SDGs and low-carbon development for Astana city

Country Director Giovanni Capannelli gave an opening speech at a Roundtable on “Perspectives of the Astana City Transition to Low-Carbon Development” chaired by Mayor of Astana city Aset Issekeshev. In his presentation, he spoke about ADB’s support to achieving SDGs targets in Kazakhstan, and an upcoming technical assistance to Astana’s low-carbon development strategy and action plan under the CAREC Program. About 90 people attended the Roundtable.

ADB and Damu hold a media briefing on MSME financing

ADB Country Director Giovanni Capannelli and Deputy Chair of Damu Entrepreneurship Development Fund Daulet Abilkairov participated in a media briefing at the Central Communication Service. They informed the media about the key results achieved under the previous joint Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Investment Program, and the financing opportunities for micro and SMEs under the new project, for which ADB and Damu signed a loan agreement in October. ADB support will allow local entrepreneurs to invest in productive technologies and grow their businesses, thereby contributing to job creation, economic stability, and diversification.

ADB reaffirms support to entrepreneurship development in Kostanay region

Country Director Giovanni Capannelli attended a meeting in the city of Arkalyk, chaired by Mr. Meirzhan Myrzaliyev, the Kostanay region Deputy Akim, where he presented on the key challenges related  to the development of entrepreneurship and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The meeting was organized by the regional government to foster socio-economic development of the area. ADB is implementing a pilot program in the Kostanay region which will deliver a roadmap and action plan in support of SMEs and entrepreneurship development through improved access to finance, capacity development and analytical work.

ADB and UN discuss Sustainable Development Goals with Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister

Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Bakhytzhan Sagintayev met with ADB Country Director Giovanni Capannelli and UN Resident Coordinator for Kazakhstan Norimasa Shimomura to discuss SDG implementation in the country.

ADB speaks at parliamentary hearings on rural water supply

Country Director Giovanni Capannelli shared ADB’s experience and views on ways to improve the rural water sector in Kazakhstan at a meeting of the unified chambers of the Parliament . He urged policymakers to consider the benefits of sovereign lending and highlighted the need to strengthen institutional coordination. Members of the Cabinet and the Presidential Administration participated in the hearings.

Establishment of Kazakhstan Knowledge Center on Integrated Water Resource Management discussed in Almaty

ADB, Ministry of Agriculture, and UNESCO organized a brainstorming meeting to discuss the Kazakhstan Knowledge Center on Integrated Water Resource Management. About 70 experts from national agencies, international organizations and academia gathered at the Kazakh National Agrarian University in Almaty to discuss the key issues to strengthen water management systems in the country and establish the Center. The Center is expected to help develop water management solutions by introducing new technologies, promoting water-related education, and preparing a pipeline of bankable projects. The event also included a “Blue Drop Innovation Challenge” contest among the students of top agricultural universities of Kazakhstan for innovative water solutions to engage the youth in water issues.
