ADB President Highlights Inequality, Climate Change, and Aging as Three Key Challenges for China’s New Era
ADB President Takehiko Nakao addressed the China Development Forum (CDF), which opened on 25 March in Beijing. Mr. Nakao met Premier Li Keqiang along with other participants of the CDF. He also participated in a roundtable with Vice Premier Liu He. During his visit, Mr. Nakao also met with Mr. Liu Kun, PRC’s new Finance Minister and ADB Governor. See news release
ADB signs Landmark Project with Icelandic, Chinese Venture to Promote Zero-Emissions Heating
ADB signed facilities of a total of $250 million in loans to Arctic Green Energy Corporation (AGE) and Sinopec Green Energy Geothermal Company Limited (SGE) to expand environmentally sustainable district heating services in PRC. See news release.
ADB’s Second Project Implementation Management Executive Seminar Conducted in Shanghai
Yao Yixin, Director from PRC’s Ministry of Finance, and Jia Xinning, Deputy County Director of PRCM opened the three-day seminar held on 21-23 March. The second seminar among a series of executive training program discussed practical solutions for common issues encountered in project implementation. Thirty executives from seven projects attended the tailor-made training program.
ADB, Kingenta Partner to Promote Modern Agricultural Services in the PRC
ADB signed a total of $80 million in assistance to subsidiaries of Kingenta Ecological Engineering Group (Kingenta), a leading compound and specialty fertilizer producer and supplier in PRC, to help promote environmentally sustainable and innovative agricultural services in the country, improving crop productivity and increasing farmers’ income and livelihoods. ADB, China Water Affairs Sign Deal to Improve Urban Water Management in PRC
ADB signed a loan equivalent of up to $200 million to help China Water Affairs Group Limited (CWA) improve wastewater management and increase people’s access to clean and reliable water supply in PRC. See news release.
ADB Participates in the 2018 Roundtable Dialogue on PRC’s Poverty Alleviation
On 1 March 2018, the PRC State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development (LGOP) hosted the 2018 Roundtable Dialogue on PRC’s Poverty Alleviation with different international organizations and non-governmental organizations in Beijing. Over 20 participants from the major international organizations in the PRC joined the dialogue. The Minister of LGOP Mr. LIU Yongfu hosted the dialogue and discussed recent progress in poverty reduction in the PRC. PRCM CD Ben Bingham highlighted the need to distill relevant lessons from poverty reduction in the PRC and to determine the future direction of poverty reduction and inclusive development.

Despite China's Fast-Growing Wealth, Millions Still Remain Poor
On 5 January 2018, the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development of the PRC launched the official statements that the total number of Chinese still living in poverty was 30 million at the end of 2017. In an article on poverty reduction in the PRC, Forbes online, RKSI’s Niny Khor cited that "Different approaches would be needed to address different households." Read the article.
