South Asia: Economy

South Asia economic data and statistics from the latest Asian Development Outlook are highlighted on this page.

Strong growth endures, but forecasts are downgraded from the Asian Development Outlook 2017 to 6.7% in 2017 (as in 2016), with acceleration to 7.0% in 2018. Revision reflects lower growth expectations for India in both years. Projections for inflation are lowered to 4.2% in 2017 and 4.7% in 2018 mainly because of reviving agriculture and despite an uptick in global commodity prices. The current account deficit is now forecast widening to 1.6% of subregional GDP in 2017 and 1.8% in 2018 as export growth underperforms the Asian norm.
