The education system in the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) had improved, but quality education still needed to be raised to make it comparable to standards in neighboring countries. The Second Education Quality Improvement Project supported the government's efforts to enhance primary and secondary education, and increase participation of girls and ethnic minorities. It built upon the reforms in the teacher training system initiated under earlier ADB activities in the sector.
