ADB President Meets Prime Minister on Annual Meeting, Attends CAREC Conference

ASTANA, KAZAKHSTAN – The President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Takehiko Nakao, is in Astana, Kazakhstan to discuss ADB Annual Meeting preparations with the Government of Kazakhstan and to attend the 12th Ministerial Conference on Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC).

Mr. Nakao paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Serik Akhmetov and visited the Palace of Independence in Astana, where ADB’s 47th Annual Meeting of its Board of Governors will take place.

He also met Kazhakstan’s Minister of Economy and Budget Planning, Erbolat Dossaev and other government officials to thank them for their support in staging the meeting which will discuss key economic, development, and connectivity issues in Asia and the Pacific on 2-5 May 2014 in Kazakhstan.

“Connectivity is an issue close to the heart of both ADB and the Government of Kazakhstan,” Mr. Nakao said. “Kazakhstan has been a key player in promoting regional connectivity since independence. With its rapid economic growth, Kazakhstan will play a key part in the region’s future prosperity.”

ADB’s Annual Meeting is expected to attract around 3,000 participants, including finance ministers and central bank governors from around the region and beyond. Representatives from international organizations, academia, the private sector, media, and civil society will also be in attendance.

The 2014 Annual Meeting will mark the first time Kazakhstan has hosted ADB’s yearly gathering. The 2015 Annual Meeting will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
