Summary
Over 169 million migrant workers have been adversely affected by lockdowns, economic slowdowns, and uncertain employment caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. These negative impacts highlight widening gaps in migrants’ welfare and working conditions, particularly among those employed in low-skilled, low-paid sectors, including women and children.
Cohosted by ADBI, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and International Labour Organization (ILO), this by-invitation roundtable examined policy responses to the COVID-19 crisis and develop post-pandemic policy recommendations for effective labor migration management in Asia through country experience and best practice-sharing. It covered recent labor migration trends, policy developments, and new related international agreements.
Objectives
- Assess the continuous impacts of COVID-19 on labor migration and policy solutions for boosting effective labor migration management in Asia
- Stocktake new policy developments for post-pandemic regional regulatory frameworks and international agreements seeking to improve labor migration
- Identify policies for enhancing labor protection and social inclusion based on international standards
