ADB will facilitate discussions throughout March, the Gender Month, to complement this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration, share experiences, and promote learning across the bank's operations. Various events are organized by different departments, from awarding gender champions and fireside chats with women leaders, to hosting hybrid knowledge sharing sessions on gender equality.

ADB’s Gender Equality Division will recognize staff who have made outstanding contributions to gender equality and women’s empowerment in 2023. Named in honor of the late Shireen Lateef, the pioneer of ADB’s gender work, these annual awards aim to recognize and inspire staff to pursue innovation and lift the bar on gender equality in operations and knowledge work.

With the global theme, ‘Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress’, International Women’s Day (IWD) 2024 emphasizes eradicating poverty among women and girls, implementing gender responsive financing, transitioning to a green and caring society, and supporting women changemakers.

Her Excellency President Hilda Heine from the Republic of Marshall Islands will deliver the keynote speech at the ADB Headquarters in Manila sharing insights from her global leadership for climate action and gender equality. The event will facilitate discussion on fostering women’s equal participation in the green economy and investing in a caring society.

IWD is an annual celebration within ADB, underscoring its commitment to and raising awareness on gender equality and women's empowerment in fostering a prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable Asia-Pacific.

To mark International Women’s Day 2024, ADB’s Lao Resident Mission (LRM) will conduct a session on 7 March to share the country gender plan and a roadmap on how ADB will invest in women in Lao PDR in the next 5 years (2024-2028) and a social media campaign on gender from 5-8 March.

Each year, a significant 64% of cases brought to the attention of the Office of the Ombudsperson originate from women. In response, the office has dedicated itself to giving voice to some of their concerns.

This is a showcase of a JFPR-financed grant project on preventing and addressing violence against women and children.
