Webinar Summary
This webinar featured Satish Ukkusuri of Purdue University who discussed the recent paradigm shift in smart mobility towards Mobility as a Service (MaaS) systems. Ukkusuri explained how these technology-based shared mobility solutions such as Uber, Didi, Grab, and other ridesharing services aimed at relieving congestion and improving sustainability may have mixed benefits for cities. Ukkusuri used big data to quantify the inequalities and externalities that such technologies can impose on cities and describe how regulations can make MaaS systems more equitable. He also discussed COVID-19’s impact on transit passenger ridership and how to safely reopen modes of transportation.
