Description

The webinar will discuss why we need better collaboration and coordination on a global science agenda that helps to find solutions for the climate and health crisis. Part of the solution is technology. Technology advancements require research, innovation ecosystems, policy support, and fast translation into action. In many countries, policy-makers, climate and health experts, and research actors face major challenges in translating a rapidly evolving body of new data/evidence into tangible response efforts across countries. To this end, the S20 group under the Indonesian Presidency has identified health, climate change, and technology as the most urgent and important challenges of the 2020s and beyond.

This webinar, in partnership with Asian Development Bank, will focus on how investments in science can strengthen the foundations for knowledge economies as a step toward healthier societies and climate change mitigation and adaptation. Knowledge economies can help diversify a country’s economy from low-value resource exploitation to higher-value technology-driven innovation. For example, investments in health-related research can create academic and private sector ecosystems for start-ups in biomedicine or digital health. Climate and environmental research can guide private sector innovation in new technologies for decarbonization and new vertical industry development.

The discussion of the webinar will inform the S20 communique for the G20 process.

Objectives

This final international S20 seminar aims to discuss why investments in science should be better coordinated across G20 countries, and how G20 members can establish a knowledge architecture that enables better collaboration research, and knowledge sharing. This architecture sits at the nexus of health, climate change, and technology, and should be guided by principles of justice, equity, and inclusiveness.
