Description
Globally, around 8% of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions are produced by growing rice. Methane is 28 times more potent as GHG than carbon dioxide. Flooded rice paddy fields account for 12% of global anthropogenic methane emissions, equivalent to 1.5% of the total warming effect of all greenhouse gases. Under common rice production practices, farmers keep rice fields flooded to suppress weed emergence. Underwater, methane is produced as organic matters decay with little access to oxygen. Instead of continuously flooding rice fields, Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) water management allows rice fields to be periodically dried. Studies found that AWD reduces methane emissions by 30%–50% and water use by 10%–20% without reducing rice yield in a season.
This joint webinar between ADB’s Agriculture, Food, Nature, and Rural Development Sector Office, and Economic Research and Development Impact Department will share experience in various countries in Asia and discuss the agenda to scale up the adoption of technologies to mitigate methane emission from rice production.
Objectives
This webinar aims to:
- Inform challenges of incentivizing rice farmers to reduce methane emission in Asia;
- Highlight best practices and lessons learned on adoption of Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD);
- Explore possibility of introducing carbon credit mechanism to accelerate support AWD adoption and other technologies to mitigate methane emission from rice production.
