Summary

The promotion of energy-efficient, climate-friendly technology is critical to meeting developing Asia’s rapidly increasing demand for cooling while advancing net-zero carbon targets, climate change mitigation under the Paris Agreement, and the Sustainable Development Goals. However, such breakthroughs will require greater cooling technology knowledge and capacity in the region.

Cohosted by ADBI, the Asian Development Bank, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the United States, this virtual workshop spotlighted new policy research on addressing climate-friendly cooling needs in developing Asian countries. The focus was on deployment challenges and viable policy and funding solutions.

Objectives
  • Examine developing Asia’s growing cooling needs

  • Highlight innovative policy and financial measures for enabling low-carbon cooling and investment

  • Discuss related deployment strategies

Target Participants
  • Policy makers and experts from think tanks, universities, and other institutions, as well as post-graduate students and interested members of the public
Output
  • Greater understanding of low-carbon cooling needs and challenges in developing Asian countries
  • Identification of policies for addressing low-carbon cooling technology and funding gaps
  • Papers featured during the workshop will be considered for publication as ADBI working papers and inclusion in an ADBI-ADB book
