13th BIMP-EAGA Leaders’ Summit - Takehiko Nakao

Speech | 23 June 2019

Remarks by Takehiko Nakao, President, Asian Development Bank at the 13th BIMP-EAGA Leaders’ Summit on 23 June 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand

Your Majesty, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen:

I am honored to join you today for this 13th Summit, which coincides with BIMP-EAGA’s 25th anniversary. I would like to thank the Government of Thailand for welcoming us so graciously, and the Government of Brunei Darussalam for the excellent arrangements.

Your Excellencies, over the past twenty-five years, BIMP-EAGA cooperation has delivered impressive results. Today numerous transport networks span across the subregion, supported by better policies facilitating the movement of goods and people. Trade is more vibrant. Joint initiatives in agriculture, tourism, investment, ICT, and human resource development are helping address shared economic, environmental and social challenges. With strong country ownership and a results-oriented approach, BIMP-EAGA also remains an integral building block for ASEAN integration.

ADB is privileged to have served as your Regional Development Advisor since 2003. Our enduring partnership has been productive, and has substantially contributed to advancing prosperity in the subregion. ADB remains firmly committed to promoting the subregion’s development agenda, as set forth in BIMP-EAGA Vision 2025, and to supporting the implementation of Priority Infrastructure Projects valued at over 22.5 billion dollars.

ADB is providing a robust range of support to promote infrastructure development in BIMP-EAGA. Cross-border energy initiatives, like the ADB-supported Sarawak-West Kalimantan Power Grid Interconnection project between Malaysia and Indonesia have enhanced electricity access. In Indonesia, ADB is supporting the development of roads in West and North Kalimantan. In Malaysia our assistance includes studies assessing the viability of road links and border area development between Sabah and North Kalimantan, and between Sarawak and West Kalimantan. In the Philippines, ADB is financing key road networks in western and south-central Mindanao, which will open new trade and investment opportunities for the whole of BIMP-EAGA. We are also supporting the rehabilitation of Marawi City, and helping to build Central Sulawesi’s resilience to natural disasters.

Through a wide range of technical assistance and knowledge support, ADB also promotes trade and transport facilitation, tourism, natural resource management, green cities, and economic corridors. In Brunei Darussalam, we are enhancing capacities of government officials to manage regional cooperation.

Your Majesty, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen:

As BIMP-EAGA enters a new era of cooperation, a key challenge will be leveraging resources to ensure continued progress for all of the subregion’s people. ADB remains strongly committed to working closely with you in making the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2025 a reality, and ensuring that BIMP-EAGA becomes a more resilient, inclusive, sustainable and economically competitive subregion. Thank you.
