Lead is a harmful substance that, if not properly handled, can impair cognitive development, especially among children. A major source of lead pollution nowadays is informal, open-air recycling of automotive batteries, particularly in developing countries. But as a recent Asian Development Bank (ADB) Policy Brief argues there are ways to make recycling practices safe, with appropriate safety standards to prevent the release of lead into the environment. A panel of experts will consider the role of communities, manufacturers, consumers, governments, and funding agencies in protecting children from the harms of lead.
