Creating sound policies and strengthening internal processes are vital aspects in delivering the right solutions to ADB’s developing member countries. Effective policies allow the different departments of ADB to mobilize resources, implement innovative solutions, and address development challenges.

Agnes Surry, a Senior Planning and Policy Specialist from France, shares how her work under the Strategy, Policy and Partnerships Department is contributing to achieving development goals and creating a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia and the Pacific.

Making an impact: Working at ADB

Meet Agnes Surry

Senior Planning and Policy Specialist from France

What is your role at ADB?

Hi, my name is Agnes Surry. I’m French and I’ve been working for ADB for more than 5 years.

When I joined ADB, I joined the Strategy, Policy, and Partnerships Department. Staff in this department are doing a lot of policy work. For example, I contributed to improve the internal policy of ADB. I also contributed to allocate concessional resources and I also undertook country risk analysis for country classification.

More recently, I was involved in a reform to improve and empower country offices spread in Asia and the Pacific to make sure ADB is able to deliver the best solution to its client.

What is your background?

I’m an economist by training. I have a Master in International Economics, with a focus on development economics.

Before joining the ADB, I was working for the French Treasury for five years, and then for the African Development Bank for three years and a half.

What are the important skills to thrive in ADB?

ADB is a multi-cultural institution with a very complex mandate. So, to me, the important skills will be openness, leadership, professionalism, and analytical skills.

What do you like most about working at ADB?

Supporting development in Asia and the Pacific will still require a lot of work and creative ideas.

What I like the most in ADB is that you never get bored because there is so much to do and the mandate of this institution is so exciting that you really feel you contribute to an important mission.
