Across the region which is almost half urbanize, we have cities under enormous pressure that haven’t planned for the transport needs. And the challenge is to quickly prepare good quality projects,  financing and help cities implement the project and also the associated policies to make the systems workable.

Text: Asia’s wealthier countries are leading in providing mass transport systems that are efficient, affordable, environmentally-friendly. ADB is helping developing Asia as it invests in cleaner transport systems.

The first bus rapid transit project that we approve began operations in 2012. This is in Lanzhou, the capital of China’s Ganzhou province. We also have similar projects underway in Lao PDR. We have planned projects in Pakistan and Philippines and other developing member countries. We’re also supporting metro rail in several countries – India and Viet Nam are amongst those.
