Description
Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy
Impact The impact of the project will be effective research based policy development and increased recognition of ADB as a premier knowledge institution. The project will strengthen the linkage between research and policymaking and help raise the reputation of ADB as a knowledge producer not only of outputs related to Asia, but of those related to the global economy as well.
Project Outcome
Description of Outcome The outcome of the project will be an improved understanding of the macroeconomic and social impacts of rising and volatile commodity prices and financial market credit constraints, and of the trends and issues underlying these markets. Knowing more about the market underpinnings of various commodities will equip ADB with the capacity to provide better policy advice to its DMCs, in terms of adapting to and mitigating the impacts of commodity price volatilities, while thorough analysis of the financial markets can help ADB member countries institute proper measures to prepare for or even prevent the next financial crisis. Moreover, the project will shed light on the macroeconomic and social impacts of natural disasters and other supply shocks as they affect prices of basic necessities and constrain access to credit.
Progress Toward Outcome
Implementation Progress
Description of Project Outputs The key outputs of the project will be: (i) knowledge products, such as daily financial, energy, and commodity price indicators bulletins, monthly global economic outlook, working papers, and opinion pieces (ii) knowledge sharing, including a webpage within the ERD site that will house the generated knowledge products, as well as workshops and conferences by well known scholars specializing in commodities and (iii0 policy advice, which includes recommendations for adapting to and mitigating the impacts of sharp movements in global commodity prices. The project activities will be overseen by the Economics and research Department of ADB.
