| Description |
Only 50% of the population has access to electric power. The remaining 50% of the population without electricity lives in rural and mountainous areas. Because of the remoteness and rough terrain, the extension of the national grid to these areas is uneconomical. Development of renewable energy sources will be environmentally friendly and will provide electricity to the remote areas and less-developed regions of the country. This will create job opportunities and will be an instrument in providing input for poverty alleviation. The national power supply shortfall could be augmented by developing the renewable sources of the country. Providing power in remote and backward areas will facilitate development of these areas, provide job opportunities to rural poor, and enhance children's welfare, health and education. The TA will prepare a project to develop indigenous, nonpolluting and renewable sources of energy to help meet the shortage and improve the quality and reliability of the power system. The TA components will include (i) review of renewable energy potential in each province; and (ii) feasibility studies. |
