Description The grant of $200,000 for financing under the Asia Pacific Disaster Response Fund (APDRF) is ADB's response to the ongoing severe drought experienced by the entire population of the Republic of Marshall Islands.
Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy On 3 February 2016, a state of emergency was proclaimed by the President of the Marshall Islands. This was elevated to a state of disaster on 8 March 2016 due to the continued lack of rainfall. On 3 March 2016, ADB received a request from the government for ADB support for immediate drought relief under the APDRF. The government reiterated the need for assistance for clean water, health kits, food rations, and logistics costs of delivery assistance to drought-affected areas. ADB has been in close contact with the United Nations Resident Coordinator and Office for the United Nations Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs throughout this emergency. Considering the scope of damages from the drought and the government's constrained resources, an allocation of $200,000 from the APDRF is considered appropriate and will assist the government to implement its drought response plan to address immediate needs.
