Dialogue on Powered Two-Wheeler Safety and Asia-Pacific Road Safety Observatory Annual Meeting

11 October 2022 Hybrid (ADB headquarters and Zoom webinar of selected sessions)

Global Regional Road Safety Observatories (GRRSO) GRRSO Dialogue on Powered Two-Wheeler Safety and Asia-Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO) Annual Meeting

Description

GRRSO Dialogue on Powered Two-Wheeler Safety – 11-12 October

From 11-12 October, APRSO and the Ibero American Road Safety Observatory (OISEVI) will co-host an interactive expert program on motorcycle safety for low and middle-income countries (LMICs) with a focus on countries for which motorcycling is the dominant road transport mode. The GRRSO Dialogue on Powered Two-Wheeler (PTW) Safety will bring together an unprecedented range of global experts and practitioners striving to address deaths and serious injuries resulting from motorcycle crashes. It will provide a unique opportunity to address issues relating to countries and cities where PTWs are the predominant form of road transport. A key feature of the event will be the conduct of a series of dialogues on some of the most challenging issues facing motorcycle safety practitioners and advocates.

Key global experts will directly engage with participants to identify evidence-based interventions to address the unacceptable loss of life due to motorcycle crashes in low and middle-income countries.

The APRSO Annual Meeting - 13 October

The Asia-Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO) is a regional forum on road safety data, policies, and practices. Its mandate is to enhance the protection of human life on the roads across Asia and the Pacific through generating robust road safety data; undertaking analysis; and developing policies for road safety actions in Asia and the Pacific member countries. APRSO was established by a group of international development organizations – The World Bank (WB), Fédération Internationale de l’ Automobile (FIA), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the International Transport Forum (ITF) and The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UK Aid through the Global Road Safety Facility (GRSF). ADB serves as the secretariat for APRSO.

Objectives

The sessions

The event will include a range of sessions featuring presentations from global experts on issues from across the safe system approach to road safety. These will include sessions focusing on safer roads for PTWs, safer vehicle standards, motorcycle helmets and related road user issues and targeted presentations focusing on planning, data and more.

Select sessions will also include high-profile events held by key global partners, where essential tools, resources and campaigns related to motorcycle safety will be highlighted.

Statement on PTW safety priorities

The event is expected to produce a communique on the priorities in road safety for jurisdictions in which motorcycle trauma dominates the crash record. The statement will reflect participant consensus and will be available for use in raising awareness and advocating for greater effort in addressing death and injury from motorcycle use. It is expected to be based on the eight recommendations of the 2021 Riding in a Safe System report.

APRSO Annual Meeting

The 2022 APRSO Annual Meeting follows on from a two-day meeting on motorcycle safety. Many of the same delegates are expected to participate in these two meetings.

The theme for the meeting is using road safety data to design evidence-based road safety interventions. This theme follows substantial prior focus on the collection of comprehensive and quality road safety data. The objective is to add to member knowledge of how collated data can be used in a arrange of ways to improve evidence-based responses to road safety challenges.
