|Description||The Project will (i) remove power supply bottlenecks in selected power substations and medium-voltage transmission lines in Java; (ii) interconnect outer island power grids; and (iii) provide information and communication technology (ICT)-based equipment for a competitive electricity market and consulting services to supervise its installation.|
|Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy||The strategic objectives of the ADB power sector in operations in Indonesia include (i) removing power supply bottlenecks in the Java-Bali medium voltage transmission grid, and (ii) to interconnect the outer island grids. This will be achieved by adding power transformers, switchyard bays, upgrading and adding 150 kV transmission lines, augmenting sub-station capacity thereby improving the quality of power supply and reducing losses. The interconnection between South Kalimantan and East Kalimantan will result in economies of scale, provide operational flexibility and maximize the use of resources.|
|Impact||Ensure quality, reliability, security and affordability of electricity and create facilities for a competitive electricity market in Java-Bali|
|Description of Outcome||
1. Enhance energy efficiency,
2. reduce power supply interruption, and
3. install competitive market facilities
|Progress Toward Outcome||--|
|Description of Project Outputs||
Interconnection of East and South Kalimantan power grids
Expansion and upgrading of 150 kV and 70 kV substations and transmission line that supply power to major load center in Java Bali
|Status of Implementation Progress (Outputs, Activities, and Issues)||
11 substation will be completed by December 2012, and 2 substation will be completed by April 2013
2 New substation has been finished on December 2009. The others 3 are still on progress and will be completed by April 2013
2 150kV TL in Kalimantan completed on December 2009, several 150 kV TL in Java will be completed on April 2013

A sector project implementation consultant will be engaged by PLN under the renewable energy development sector project to help supervise the implementation of subprojects under it and this Project concurrently.
An ICT consultant will be engaged under the Project to help supervise the installation of ICT-based equipment. The ICT consultant will be recruited by PLN using quality- and cost-based selection in accordance with ADB's Guidelines on the Use of Consultants and other arrangements satisfactory to ADB on the engagement of domestic consultants. The ICT consultant will provide an estimated 48 person-months of international consulting services.
Procurement of transformers and capacitor, switchgear for substations, and 150 kV transmission line.
