Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy | The Maldives consists of 1,190 islands, stretches over 900 kilometers (km) northsouth in the Indian Ocean with a population of 300,000 in 2006. There are only 200 inhabited islands, 142 of which are by less than 1000 people. One-third of the country''s population live in the capital island of Male, in the Central region, where the country's economic and development activities are concentrated. Lack of connectivity is a major constraint to the country''s sustainable and inclusive development in remote atolls, particularly in the Northern region. The Household Income and Expenditure Survey in 2009/2010 shows there are around 54,700 inhabitants in the Northern region (18%) that fall below the poverty line. This figure is notably higher than the approximate 34,800 inhabitants in the Southern Region (12%). Imbalance in accessibility to opportunities, enterprise, markets, and services in the Northern region is one of the constraints faced by the Government of Maldives (the Government) in achieving broad based economic growth, which is one of the major development goals under the 7th National Development Plan. | ||||
