The project will provide paved road connections incorporating climate adaptation and mitigation principles to ensure all-weather access between aimag capitals in Western Mongolia: Altai, Gobi-Altai to Uliastai, Zavkhan and Khovd, Khovd to Ulaangom, Uvs.
Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy

(i) addressing remaining poverty and reducing inequalities through provision of safe, all-weather roads linking rural communities with education, employment, and services;

(ii) accelerating progress in gender equality through training, jobs, and improved safety for vulnerable road users, who are more often women and children;

(iii) tackling climate change, building climate and disaster resilience, through including climate adaptation and mitigation principles;

(iv) promoting rural development and food security through improvement of transport infrastructure; (v) strengthening governance and institutional capacity in road safety, road asset management, and climate adaptation and mitigation; and (vi) fostering regional cooperation and integration through improving access to markets and supporting CAREC Transport Strategy 2030.
