Description | The project preparatory technical assistance (PPTA) is needed for preparing the investment program and conducting technical, economic, financial, governance, safeguards, gender and social due diligence for the ensuing multi-tranche financing facility (MFF).
Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy | Urban centers are driving economic growth in India. More than 30% of India's current population lives in urban areas and contributes 63% of India's gross domestic product (Census 2011). These figures are expected to increase to 40% and 75%, respectively, by 2030. While high urbanization can yield higher productivity and better living standards, Indian cities face persistent development challenges: high urban poverty (35%), environmental and public health hazards, poor hygiene and sanitation behaviors, high water losses (up to 60%) with limited access to 24x7 supply, extensive flooding, unmet energy demands, infrastructure deficits, and weak governance and institutions. Integrated and effective urban development is needed to provide sustainable and affordable basic services. There is an enormous potential to scale up good practices in urban planning and infrastructure development, improve behaviors in hygiene and sanitation, and strengthen institutions to improve living standards for all urban residents.
