Turkmenistan : Modernization of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures for Food Safety

The small scale policy and advisory technical assistance (S-PATA) supports Turkmenistan's efforts to accelerate the implementation of key elements of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Common Agenda for Modernization of Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Measures. Specifically, the S-PATA will contribute in implementing food safety measures in the country. It will support key provisions of the CAREC Transport and Trade Facilitation Strategy 2020 and the CAREC Trade Policy Strategic Action Plan. The proposed S-PATA is consistent with the recommendations set forth in the final consultant report of the Technical Assistance for Promoting Cooperation in SPS Measures for Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (R-PATA 8386) which provides and SPS needs assessment for CAREC countries.

Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy Turkmenistan has no formal strategy for SPS measures. However, the country has a number of laws and policy reforms pertaining to food safety, animal and plant health that could be revised to make food safety measured compliant with international standards.
