Description

The technical assistance (TA) is a small-scale project preparatory TA, financed by ADB''s Technical Assistance Special Fund (TASF-V) and was approved on 14 Dec 2016 to support the preparation of the Ganges-Kobadak Irrigation Modernization Project (GKIMP).

The proposed GKIMP is the continuation of ADB's engagement to support Bangladesh in increasing the productivity and sustainability of large-scale irrigation. It aims to modernize the Ganges-Kobadak Irrigation Project infrastructure and establish performance-based irrigation management and agriculture support services through private sector participation. The GKIMP feasibility studies and detailed designs are financed under the ongoing Loan 3135-BAN: Irrigation Management Improvement Project (IMIP). The feasibility study was completed in 2018. The detailed design is expected to be completed by late 2020. The TA provides expert support for quality assurance and timely project processing. Its outputs will be (i) technical, safeguards, economic and financial due diligence reviews of the ensuing project completed; and (ii) GKIMP project readiness requirements met on time. The executing agency is the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).

Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy The technical assistance (TA) was included in the country operations business plan, 2017-2019 for Bangladesh. The TA is required to support the preparation of the Ganges-Kobadak Irrigation Modernization Project (GKIMP) which is listed in the country operations business plan, 2017-2019 for Bangladesh for possible Board consideration in 2021.
