Description The project consist of activities relating to the provision of life preserving services for communities affected by the following natural disaster: the El-Nino Southern Oscillation effect, causing serious drought conditions in South Central and Central Highland regions as well as severe drought and saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta.
Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy The government has acknowledged ADB's valuable contribution in supporting medium to long term solutions. In addition, by letter dated 20 April 2016, the government specifically requested ADB's grant assistance through the APDRF, to address the immediate humanitarian needs including: provision of drinking water; ensuring access to clean water sources; containing the rising cases of disease; addressing food shortages; and addressing malnutrition.

Progress Toward Outcome

- Retroactive financing for construction of 20 water wells in the two provinces of Dak Lak and Tien Giang

- Provision and installation of water storage tanks and water purifiers at schools and community places

- Provision of water storage tanks to affected households. The project provided two types of water tanks, i.e., 1000L and 1500L water tanks to a total 7,700 households in seven provinces of the affected area.
