Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy | Fiji, a Pacific developing member country of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), offered to host the 52nd Annual Meeting in Nadi. The Board of Governors agreed at the 50th Annual Meeting in Yokohama, Japan that the 2019 Meeting be held from 2 to 5 May 2019 in Nadi. This will be the first time that ADB will have its Annual Meeting in a Pacific developing member country. This is an opportunity to showcase Fiji and the region's development progress, which provides scope to highlight the vulnerabilities of small island developing states to climate change and disasters caused by natural events. Fiji has one of the most developed economies in the Pacific, with annual incomes of $5,585 per capita. The economy is estimated to have grown by 3.9% in 2017, the 8th successive year of growth. Tourism is the main driver of the economy with almost 843,000 visitor arrivals in 2017, compared to its population of almost 885,000. With capacity to host a large number of visitors, Nadi is also appropriately geared to hosting the meeting with a number of hotels in the area and the international airport close to the proposed meeting venue. The 2019 Annual Meeting in Fiji is expected to attract 3,000 5,000 delegates from member governments, civil society groups, private sector and the media. This will be the largest ever number of delegates hosted by Fiji. | ||||
