Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy Indonesia is in one of the world's most disaster-prone regions. The country is exposed to a wide range of natural hazards including flooding, earthquakes, landslides, tsunami, volcanic eruptions, and recently, liquefaction. Over the last 30 years, there have been an average of 289 significant disasters per year and an average annual death toll of approximately 8,000. 2018 has been a particularly destructive year for Indonesia. The severity and frequency of these disasters are stretching national and local government capacity to respond and recover. Fiscal adjustments will be required at national and local levels to meet disaster recovery needs.
