Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy | Afghanistan's agricultural sector accounts for 25% of national gross domestic product (GDP) and employs 40% of the workforce. In agriculture, livestock subsector contributes about 3.8% of the country's GDP and provides employment equivalent of 1.1 million full-time jobs (of which 15% are in off-farm locations). Eighty percent of the country's population reside in rural areas, where poverty levels are greatest and employment opportunities for off-farm work are limited.1 Given its prominent socio-economic contributions, livestock development has been a priority in generating employment and reducing poverty as it increases incomes of livestock farmers/producers, and viability of agribusiness enterprises important agents for sustainable market linkages and efficiency gains. | ||||
