Description The proposed knowledge and support technical assistance (TA) will support climate resilience of highways in the People's Republic of China (PRC) by providing research, technical and policy solutions, and knowledge sharing activities.
Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy The Yellow River Basin faces complex and increasing climate risk. Covering an area of 752,400 square kilometers, the basin spans nine provinces and is home to around 150 million people._The basin is a critical economic and ecological corridor with diverse ecology, natural resources, agricultural production, and manufacturing zones. The Yellow River Basin is a regionally important transport corridor which is severely affected by climate-related impacts. Damage and disruption to a single point to highway infrastructure in the corridor due to flooding, landslides, extreme cold and other hazards can lead to widespread economic losses and community impacts. Climate adaptation of highway infrastructure systems is critical to ensure sustainable economic development in the Yellow River Basin and PRC. There is a strong need to capture local data on projected climate scenarios, sector vulnerability, and impacts on highway systems in the Yellow River Basin and other key economic hubs to inform effective climate adaptation technical and strategy responses, and to build capacity of government and private sector stakeholders to ensure well-coordinated, high quality implementation of adaptation solutions.
