Social protection expenditure is equivalent to about 4.6% of gross domestic product (GDP) and 4.0% of GDP per capita in 2018, down from 4.2% in 2015. Of the overall Social Protection Indicator (SPI) in 2018, 2.6% goes to social insurance and 1.4% to social assistance. The Maldives has no identified labor market programs. Disaggregation into depth and breadth also shows declines from 2015. The breadth is 68.1% of target beneficiaries, which indicates less coverage of social protection programs across the country from the 2015 coverage of 70.7%.
