Using the revised 2018 Social Protection Indicator (SPI) methodology, for 2018, the total social protection expenditure is estimated at S$22.8 billion, constituting about 4.65% of the 2018 national gross domestic product (GDP) of S$491.2 billion. The overall SPI value for 2018 is 5.7%, which is dominated by the SPI value for social insurance (4.6%) compared with those for social assistance (0.8%) and labor market programs (0.3%). In 2015, the overall SPI was 6.2% (i.e., social insurance, 4.80%; social assistance, 1.10%; and labor market programs, 0.32%. The decrease in the 2018 SPI value can be attributed to some noticeable growth trends during 2015–2018.
