During the field operations, the land surface is distorted with formation of substantial irregularities due to settling and swelling of the soil, impact of tillage and harvesting machines, creation and destruction of ridges, temporary irrigation ditches, furrows etc. At the unleveled surface, hilly places are poorly irrigated and leached resulting in sparse cropping and spot salinity. The desire to equal distribute water along the entire poorly leveled field during the irrigation/leaching results in excessive water consumption and loss.

Consultants' reports describe activities by a consultant or group of consultants related to preparing a technical assistance project.
