Achieving Nationally Determined Contributions through Market Mechanisms in Asia and the Pacific

Publication | February 2020

This working paper analyzes the nationally determined contributions (NDCs) of ADB’s developing member countries (DMCs) in line with opportunities that may be relevant to Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

NDCs are at the heart of the Paris Agreement and outline the climate change adaptation and mitigation commitments of countries. The paper focuses on the context of the intent and preparedness of DMCs to use market mechanisms in achieving targets set out in their NDCs and potentially raising ambition over time. It also assesses 20 out of 41 DMCs in Asia and the Pacific that have expressed intent to use market mechanisms in their NDCs—in terms of their experience and preparedness for accessing new carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
