This brief explains how environmental carrying capacities (ECCs) can improve the sustainable management and preservation of highly sensitive marine ecosystems at Coron and El Nido in the Philippines.

The approach to defining initial ECCs for selected coral reef ecotourism sites in Coron and El Nido are discussed based on studies undertaken by ADB as part of a technical assistance project on sustainable tourism development. The findings and data presented in the brief offer a better understanding of why ECCs can help effectively control and manage the impact of tourism on blue ocean ecosystems. They also underscore the significance of ECCs in shaping development policies and sustainable resource management.
