Building on Kazakhstan’s strong nomadic values of kinship, the country’s robust network of civil society organizations (CSOs) works closely with the government to support vulnerable groups and tackle environmental issues.

This brief outlines how CSOs sprang up after the country’s independence in 1991 and mainly depended on state funds as they quickly grew. Subject to stringent financial reporting rules, some, however, struggle with financial management and planning. Explaining how they are exploring new sources of income and using social media to raise awareness, it shows how ADB and other development partners work alongside Kazakhstan’s energetic and resilient CSOs.
