This brief examines economic and investment activities between Mongolia and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (IMAR) of the People’s Republic of China to determine the impact and potential benefits of a border investment program.

Multiregional input–output tables were used to estimate the cross-border spillover benefits to Mongolia of an IMAR investment program. The results of the study suggest that multiregional input–output modeling can help in estimating possible spillover benefits of border investments. Projects from initiatives such as the IMAR investment program can promote the creation of economic corridors—allowing for broader output and employment impact that can go beyond national borders.
