This brief analyzes the challenges of providing hospital services to rural and remote communities in Asia and the Pacific and suggests ways of expanding access as demographics, technology, and climate risk evolve.

It explains why people in rural and remote areas, who make up half the region’s population, are more likely to suffer from poor overall health and be reluctant to travel long distances to seek hospital care. Cautioning against replicating urban health-care models, it outlines how to identify underserved areas, find the root causes of care gaps, and attract investment to help improve long-term health outcomes.

This brief is a partnership between the Asian Development Bank, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and Aceso Global.
