Publication | July 2016

A key challenge to middle-income countries will be to embrace urbanization that is both efficient and sustainable. A learning event held on 12 July 2016 recognizes that managing urbanization is an important part of nurturing growth.

Neglecting cities—even in countries in which the level of urbanization is low—can impose heavy costs. Efficient, inclusive and sustainable urbanization however, poses a challenge for many middle-income countries, the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters, and the spurred the need to adapt to climate change has only added to this challenge.

Given the complexity of these challenges, innovation and risk taking in addressing them must be encouraged. For this reason, it is important that development practitioners, policy makers, and representatives from the corporate sector and academia have opportunities to share lessons and successful innovative approaches to managing urbanization.
