Strengthening Cooperative Institutions to Support Sustainable Livestock Production in Mongolia

Publication | November 2022

This brief explains how creating an enabling environment for Mongolia’s herder cooperatives and better integrating small-scale herders can help develop more sustainable livestock systems and drive greater export capacity.

It analyzes the progress of an ADB-supported pilot project to strengthen cooperatives and outlines how integrating sustainable pasture management and value chain development can help Mongolia improve its animal production. As Mongolia grapples with rising animal numbers and overgrazing, it shows why strengthening incentives for pasture-use contracts, building formal marketing institutions, and setting out clear legislation for agricultural service cooperatives can provide effective and sustainable solutions.
