The case study discusses the experience of Thailand’s National Housing Authority in the issuance of thematic bonds to build green, affordable housing for the country’s low-income residents.

The emerging market in thematic bonds for affordable housing is already starting to help countries in the region raise funds to meet the increasing housing demand with more energy- and resource-efficient designs, while also contributing to sustainable economic development through green job creation. This new trend offers an opportunity to diversify housing finance, which is traditionally provided by commercial banks. The case study also highlights the experience of the Republic of Korea and New Zealand in developing standards and financing options for affordable housing.
